The truth is out there and according to some theorists, as long ago as 467 BC, Chinese astronomers recorded some odd aerial phenomena. This nowadays would likely be referred to as 'UFOs'. These ancient astronomers would log the information on their personalised calendars (no, seriously!) and they wrote at length about the strange objects which they would see in the sky. One Chinese astronomer even described an object looked like a giant pearl. He went on to say that this opened up and shone a bright line of light down on to the earth.

UFO only really stands for Unidentified Flying Object, but because in recent years it has been used as a synonym for spacecrafts, the military tend to use UAP to describe the odd flying things they can't identify these days. UAP stands for Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, which means exactly the same as UFO, but it doesn't carry the same stigma.

Being that the main part of UFO is the word 'unidentified' most rationalists' say that Aliens are not out there and that really most UFOs could be anything from wayward children's balloons to gas pockets.

Swamp Ghosts and Space Crafts

Did you know, for example, that ghostly lights often hover over marsh and bog land in the night? These are called 'will-o'-the-wisp' and they're believed to be made of swamp gasses. The scientific explanation for the lights is that a combination of chemicals such as methane gases produced from rotting organic matter and hydrogen phosphate create the floating lights.

Italian chemists have actually replicated the process by adding chemicals to the gasses made from rotting meats and vegetation and proven how easily these ghostly lights can occur. So that might account for floating things which light up, but what about abductions?

Alien Abductions

People who are abducted by Aliens are named 'abductees' or 'experiencers' in UFO enthusiast circles. In the rest of the world, they're known as crackpots! However, some crackpots have made very strong cases over the years that support the existence of extra-terrestrials.

The first ever widely publicised Alien Abduction was of Betty and Barney Hill in 1961 and they claimed that they were able to communicate with the Aliens who abducted them. Betty famously said that she asked where the Alien examining her was from and that it showed her a map of the Zeta Reticuli star system which would take about 1 billion years to reach from planet earth.

Both Betty and Barney Hill were holding respectable jobs as a Social and Postal Worker. They were on local community boards such as the NAACP and the U.S Civil Rights Commission. They claimed to be abducted while driving home from a vacation and reported seeing lights in the sky followed by an odd flying object. They stopped the car to let the dog get some fresh air and to see if they could identify it.

Soon they were driving again and frightened because the car began to shake oddly, as if an electrical current were running through it. Both Barney and Betty then reported a period of lapsed consciousness before they remember driving again and getting home a full 7 hours later than they should have. Following the experience, Betty began to have bad dreams, which she regarded as flashbacks of an Alien examination, and soon the couple was famous.

Was this a UFO?.

And there were tools, things that I have never seen in my life lying next to me, they looked like weird alien technology, way ahead of our time, buttons all over, mostly silver and black, as I lay there unable to scream or move, one of them stepped in, she looked, beautiful, she had long brunette hair, oriental eyes, with a red dress, and she was extremely tall, she never said a word, though I could feel her pressing a cold tool across my stomach, as if she was ironing my stomach, it felt weird and as if it would make me sick, though I never did throw up, once again from the ceiling above me, a light appeared and shined straight into my eyes blinding me once again, and I woke up in my bedroom.

At first I thought I must have been dreaming, but I felt weird pains in my stomach, so I quickly jumped out of my bed, turned on my light and looked at my stomach, what I found shocked me, there was little bumps all over my stomach, in weird patterns and colours, they tingled when I touched them and made me feel sick just to look at them, by the next day they just seemed to disappear, and to this day I cannot explain what happened.

Was I abducted by aliens?

The alien abduction experience of Travis Walton happened November 5, 1975 about 9 miles south of Heber, Arizona. As he was traveling with co-workers on the road to Snowflake, Walton was abducted by aliens all while seven fellow tree loggers were watching.

After spotting a large UFO, the group stopped the car, and Walton walked toward the UFO. The spacecraft shined a bright light on him and then he was compelled by some mystery force to the ground. His fellow workers shocked by what they were witnessing fled the site.

Unfortunately, Walton disappeared and remained missing for five days. Authorities began a widespread search in the area and even opened a murder investigation of his fellow loggers due to his mysterious disappearance.

Walton recalled much of his experience under hypnosis. He later stated that after being compelled to the ground he recalled waking up to a bright light in his eyes. He states he had a panicked reaction with hurting in his chest and head. Believing he was in a hospital because of the brilliant light, he was surprised once he looked round and saw three mysterious, extraterrestrial beings that appeared like five foot tall fetuses. The alien beings wore orange, baggy robes without familiar symbols or emblems and had characteristically large eyes much like recognized descriptions of the Grey aliens. They worked silently in what seemed to be some form of exam room.

Attempting to protect himself, Walton said he grabbed an 18 inch long cylinder and threatened the beings. They merely backed away from him and left the room. Shortly thereafter, one other being sporting a navy uniform and helmet and possessing a human appearance led him from the examination room into a new brightly lit room. Luckily, Walton was found five days later after his alien abduction by a fuel station near the town of Heber.

Further information about alien abductions and Walton's encounter was documented in his book, The Walton Experience, in addition to a full length feature film, Fire in the Sky.

His conclusion is not unique as studies conducted by other respected psychologists and psychiatrists revealed no aberrant mental health conditions in the people claiming to have been abducted by aliens.

Could they be telling the truth? And what was the motivation? Coincidence over thousands of cases? It had to be more than that.

Abductors were aliens though of varying types described ay humanoid reptiles, greys, non-distinguishable human form and energy beings.

There's no demographic concentration even as aliens prefer younger people below the age of 40 as most abduction have a reproductive focus that are considered healthier at a younger age. There have been similar reports from children.

The abduction generally describe a sequence of events starting from being captured and forcibly taken into an alien space craft, intensive and often invasive medical and physical examination conducted by aliens, a conference with the abductors, a loss of time perceptive, return to the place where they were abducted and an aftermath consisting of a profound awareness of the universe and the supernatural coupled with some post traumatic coping with the experience from a social perspective as loved ones seldom believe their stories.

What makes the phenomenon arresting is that most alien abductees revealed fascinating details under hypnosis that would not be possible if the revelation were concocted or fabricated under a conscious state of mind.

The precise number of abductees may never be ascertained as many prefer to remain silent of their experience. There have been about 1,700 abduction claims since it was documented in the 50s. The most famous was the Antonio Villas Boas case in 1957 and the Hill Abduction of 1961 which were the first "canonical" cases that established the template for later abduction cases that would rarely deviate from it. Since then, the phenomenon has gained widespread interest with a TV film Betty and Barney Hill Abduction in 1975.

For sure, as there are believers and people with an open mind about the phenomenon, there are skeptics who consider abductees as suffering from some temporary psychological disturbance like schizophrenia, parasomnia or epileptic seizure.

Others attribute the commonality of abducted cases with previous similar abductions from devils and demons common throughout history when spaceships never figured in the pop culture consciousness of their times. The central abduction elements are there with just the abductor personality changed. Abductions seem to see no end in sight prompting government agencies to start looking for intelligent life in the universe with giant antennas.
