Turn on the TV or open a magazine and you will find endless advertisements for drugs from pharmaceutical companies. The pharmaceutical companies have huge advertising budgets because they are in a billion dollar industry. Treatments for diabetes have played a large role in pharmaceutical revenues. These corporate America drug companies have created helpful treatments for diabetes, but at what cost?

The cost is that diabetics have become dependent upon these drug treatments. Plus, they are only treatments and not a cure for diabetes. This leaves many diabetics to wonder why drug companies don’t spend time searching for a cure instead of just promoting treatments. The money these drug companies reel in every day is more than enough to fund studies to find a cure for diabetes.

Many drug companies don’t push money into diabetes cure research because if a cure or a way to prevent diabetes is found then their lucrative drugs will become obsolete. This is a greedy mentality that is not in the best interests of people with diabetes. Unfortunately, drug companies have the upper hand because diabetes is a disease which we do not choose and have to manage with their treatments.

In addition, many drug companies tout new treatments each year that are in fact a revised version of past treatment options. They bring new drugs to the market in hopes of earning a quick dollar, or millions of dollars, when in fact it is a new spin on an old treatment. This can be frustrating, misleading, and expensive for diabetes sufferers.

Drug companies also focus on diabetic aids such as blood glucose monitors, insulin pumps, and insulin pens. Theses products are often recommended in addition to prescription medication. Drug companies push these products because it means even more money in their pocket. Plus, these products will be used throughout your life so it means a constant supply of profit for drug companies.

The sad fact is that drug companies don’t have our best interests at heart. They see dollar signs instead of human faces. Many bigwigs at the drug companies will continue to capitalize on the increase in the diabetes epidemic. More diabetes sufferers leads to a bigger market which puts more money in their pockets.

People with diabetes need to stand up against these drug corporations. We need to remove the stronghold they have upon us. One way to achieve this goal is to change our lifestyle to help prevent diabetes. For example, Type 2 diabetes is often due to or amplified by being overweight. As diabetics we can engage in diabetes prevention by selecting healthy food options, exercising, and reducing weight. These are actions that we can take without paying a drug company. We can also look to dietary supplements for their benefits on blood sugar.

Diabetics need to stand up for their rights. We need to push to have money spent on publicizing the ways to reverse diabetes as opposed to treatment only. We need to cap the prices on diabetes treatments so that they are at a manageable level for diabetes sufferers. Otherwise, the drug companies will live large while we are trying to maintain a normal life.

Pineville Woman Pleads Guilty to Mail Fraud

I have grown up to hear lots of different stories and hearsay about the British tap water system being unsafe to drink as it may contain some harmful chemicals – like chlorine. However, I have also been aware of the amount of people either spending out on massive bottles of mineral water, or investing in clever water filters and water filtered jugs. I used to believe that this was all over the top and full of nonsense, but now I have come to the realisation that there may be a fraction of truth in these warnings of drinking water safety.

I for one would never drink tap water when I am abroad as may be the case for everyone who are travelling abroad on holiday. As you are not aware of how safe the plumbing system is, it is best to put your health first and opt to buy bottled water. I have known people to take water purifying tablets, but those are only useful for extreme regions and expeditions rather than in places like Spain or Italy! With this in mind I had invested on small water filters to take with me on my last holiday, this worked out fine and cheaper than spending out on gallons of bottled water.

Water filters are handy for holidays as they are light, small and cost effective. They can work in various different ways, the most commonly used filters are ones that work from purifying water through ion exchange, sieving and absorption of small chemical particles, which a normal sieve could not pass through. Different types of filters are readily used for office water fountains, aquariums, irrigation, drinking water and swimming pools. The different types of filters include media filters, screen filters, disk filters, slow sand filter beds, rapid sand filters and cloth filters.

Filters are mainly used to soften the water and remove chemicals such as chlorine; there are water other purification methods that are just as effective if not more advanced as standard home water filters; however, they are not as readily portable as filters can be. The various water purification methods include reverse osmosis (involves a separation process that pushes a solvent through a permeable membrane), distillation (separates chemical substances in a boiling liquid mixture), ultra filtration (similar to reverse osmosis only pushing the solution through various semi-permeable membranes), deionisation (involves removing extra ions from the water) and finally carbon treatment used for wastewater treatments.

Drinking water in the UK mainly come from the surface such as lakes, reservoirs, rivers and ground water. The remaining amount comes from aquifers, which are underground geological formations that store rainwater. Our source waters are treated because although they are drawn from safe high quality areas, they are still treated through various ways as an extra precaution to remove pathogens. Surface waters are usually treated naturally from direct sunlight, which eliminates pathogens naturally. Therefore, our drinking water system is safer to drink, as chlorine is used as a disinfectant. However, as mentioned previously many have argued the health issues of using chlorine in water and it is a debate that continues to stand at the forefront of health and safety.

One thing is for certain there are more affordable ways for people to filter and purify their water, without having to spend extra amounts of money on bottled water all the time. Tap water may not be for some, the ideal way to consume water, but a few little tools can be used to make it that much safer without it being detrimental to your health. However, it is safe to say that there are no real harmful chemicals in the water supply other than the use of chlorine, in which the water suppliers maintain is not going to cause long-term health issues. It is a matter of choice and though there will be a continued debate against the use of chlorine there are always an abundance of water filters available, which if I say so myself are very useful.

Going for Mesotherapy treatment to lose belly fat or fat loss from any part of the body has always been complicated and controversial subject. This method commonly used for targeted body part weight loss is very popular in France, but is frowned upon by health authorities in many countries such as Singapore.

In March 2008, Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) warned patients and doctors against a list of unproven aesthetic treatments offered by doctors, from Mesotherapy designed to dissolve fat to anti-aging hormonal injections. However, there are also patients believes that those treatments work and thus the shroud controversy.

This article is not discuss whether Mesotherapy treatment is effective and safe to reduce weight or ideal for spot reduction, but will describe what this body shaping treatment is about.

The Mesotherapy was medical technique developed in 1952 by a French doctor, Dr. Michel Pistor. It is a procedure where a cocktail of medication and vitamins is injected into the mesoderm, the layer of fat and connective tissue which lies just under the skin.

Since then, thousands of doctors and physicians all over the world have used Mesotherapy for a variety of reasons such as overall weight loss, spot weight reduction, body shaping, cellulite reduction, wrinkle elimination etc. Mesotherapy is also often used to correct unevenness, lumps, or divots that develop after liposuction procedures. Liposuction is also another body fat elimination technique where body fat is physically and painfully sucked out.

The French Academy of Medicine endorsed Mesotherapy as an inherent part of traditional medicine since 1987 and The International Society of Mesotherapy has membership of about 15 countries from Europe to South America.

Mesotherapy treatment involves using a very small needle and medication is injected into the mesoderm. Sometimes the technique of “multi-pricking” is used. This technique involve number of swift injections are concentrated in a specific body part. Although “multi-pricking” can be done by hand, some treatment centers offer mechanical delivery systems that deliver the medication in a more accurate way and to reduce patient discomfort.

The medications used in Mesotherapy are supposedly designed to melt the fat cells under the skin and shrink the fat cells in the Scarpa’s fascia layer. The fat is then said to be excreted along with the bowel without any changes in the patient’s bowel movement habits.

For cellulite reduction, weight loss, spot reduction and body shaping, the medications are injected directly into the areas that are being treated. Treatments are usually given weekly and patients are supposed to be able to see visible improvement by the third or fourth treatment.

The medication used in a Mesotherapy treatment is usually a combination of vitamins, herbal products and medication. Many factors are taken into consideration when determining which is the most effective and safe combination.

Physicians administering the treatments will usually ask patients to follow a natural and healthy diet to compliment the treatment and because toxins are also eliminated in the process, patients must drink more water than usual to flush out the toxins and dissolved fat.

Patients who are pregnant, insulin dependant diabetics, history of stroke, cancer, blood clots and heart diseases are not good candidates for the procedure.

So does Mesotherapy work or is it a safe technique for weight loss and body shaping? The verdict is still out there until more scientific and medical rather than anecdotal evidence become more apparent.

No doubt about the pawns in this international game of chess. The general public, the six pack majority, the middle class, the poor, come to think of it about anyone without a major financial interest in oil fits the Webster’s definition of a pawn; “a person used to advance another’s purposes.

So if most of us are pawns who are the kings? Think about it. If you believe Congress, the news media (at least the broadcast news media), the administration and the analysts you can pick between the major international oil companies, oil producers, China, or the gas guzzling Americans. There is no agreement and it is almost as if there is no thought about it.

The oil companies and oil producers are making record shattering profits. Are they the only ones benefiting from the astronomical profits being made in the oil industry? Hardly! No the river of greed flows in many directions including the financial houses underwriting the oil business and managing their money who also provide the depressing analysis that seems to drive the price up every day.

So why aren’t the network news people or our elected representatives in our nation’s capitol asking questions about it? Americans have reduced their use of oil. The inventories in America are the highest in years. Future demand is certain to go down with the 40% increase in hybrid cars and reduced driving. Weather has been warmer than normal thus reducing heating oil demand. Every economic indicator says the price should be dropping, not rising to record highs.

Where are the outraged congressmen, senators, presidential candidates, governors and media, the so-called protectors of the people? Are they for real? Or are they simply in the pocket of the kings of the oil profits, the oil barons of the 21st century? Well the campaign contributions seem to indicate they have been bought off. So do the millions of dollars being spent on advertising by oil related industries.

The price of oil is set by two things primarily, the policies of OPEC, the Organization of Producing Countries, and the oil futures markets of which one of the largest is the London futures exchange. Saudi Arabia controls OPEC and Saudi Arabia has just said it will do nothing to reduce the price of oil. Thank you and goodbye.

Of course Saudi Arabia is one of the prime beneficiaries of the war in Iraq financed by the USA at a cost to date of about $500 billion, yes 500 billion dollars according to the Congressional Budget Office. The same Al-Qaeda terrorists after us hate the Saudis even though Osama Bin Laden is from Saudi Arabia. He says the Saudi kings sold out to us. More likely they sold out to the oil and finance companies.

Then there are the oil futures markets. The International Petroleum Exchange of London was one of the largest in the world but in 2001 a company that had been formed just a year earlier, a company called InterContinental Exchange (ICE), purchased it. How could one of the largest futures exchanges in the world be taken over by a relatively unknown company?

The company was taken over by 13 equity investors when it began and the gang of 13 has made ICE into one of the most profitable operations in the world buying and selling oil and other commodity futures. Who were the 13? Three of the largest oil companies in the world – Royal Dutch Shell, BP Amoco and Total Fina Elf, two of the top investment banks on Wall Street – Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, two of Europe’s leading financial institutions – Deutsche Bank and Socit Generale, and six US energy companies – American Electric Power, Aquila Energy, Duke Energy, El Paso Energy, Reliant Energy and Mirant.

Now ICE claims over 300 companies are equity owners. ICE is doing what it is intended to do, making a lot of people and companies very, very rich and ICE has no responsibility for what happens to the pawns at the other end of the energy network. Note that Shell and BP both had record profits the 1st quarter of this year. No one should be denied the right to make profits, even outrageous profits, as long as they were made using fair business practices.

So what about the investment banks and financial institutions owning part of ICE? Could that cause any problem? It depends on whether these institutions use their own analysts to try and manipulate the oil futures market and elevate the price of crude oil. When an analyst specializing in oil goes on TV and says the weather or war or the unstable economy in America is driving up the price of oil and we should brace ourselves for $4 a gallon gasoline, the oil price goes up.

If that analyst is from one of the many investment banks or financial institutions owning equity in ICE, and their analysis sends the oil price in an upward spiral, then one wonders if a conflict of interest may be present. What is Congress or the FTC or SEC doing to check on the potential for conflicts of interest between oil producers, financial institutions and the futures market? Does anyone even care?

Well hopefully when the presidential candidates are accepting the millions of campaign dollars from these industries they are not making promises to continue to ignore what is devastating to the Pawns across America and the world.

Google’s mission, according to its corporate web site, is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”[1]. This may be their purpose, but they are financing this goal by dominating the long tail of the world wide web. Through its network of web properties, web applications and services, Google is brilliantly plotting to virtually own your online eye-time.

In a span of only 10 years, Google has grown from the graduate-level computer science project of Larry Page and Sergey Brin into the most valuable and pervasive network of properties and technologies on the world wide web.

Google’s properties include Google Search, Gmail, Google Reader, Google Code, Google Apps Partner Edition, iGoogle, Google Sites, YouTube, Maps, News, Shopping Groups, Books, Scholar, Finance, Blogger and too many others to list. There is scarcely a web site that Google does not touch in some way, whether it be via AdWords, AdSense, Analytics or Search.

Additionally, through the acquisition of technologies such as Urchin (now Google Analytics) and DoubleClick, Google is able to study how web users spend their time online, and position relevant advertising alongside nearly every piece of information that travels across the world wide web.

Google is also greatly extending its reach by offering a re-brandable version of Google Apps to Internet Service Providers, businesses, educational institutions and non-profit organizations. This strategic move allows Google to to expand its empire by offering improved infrastructure to the barbarians like the Romans did two thousand years ago.

Six Degrees of Google

In his book “Linked”[2], Albert-László Barabási explores the ideas of Graph Theory as they apply to various types of networks. An example of Graph Theory at work is the popular game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon in which a player picks any random or obscure actor and another tries to connect them to Kevin Bacon is 6 links or less. Barabási explains, using Graph Theory, that there is nothing particularly unusual about Kevin Bacon’s position in Hollywood circles. In fact all entities or nodes in a given network are connected to all others by an astonishingly small number of links. For instance, Barabási found that every web page is connected to every other one of the billions of pages on the world wide web by an average of only 19 links or degrees of separation.

The close connection between all nodes in a graph, as Barabási explains, is possible due to what are known as Super Nodes[2], or nodes that have a very large number of links to other nodes. Super Nodes, within any graph, are the most important nodes because they connect all the others and shorten the distance between any two smaller nodes. This concept is exactly what Larry Page stumbled upon when he created the idea of PageRank[3]. Web pages or web sites with the most links are the super nodes of the world wide web. Google is arguably the largest of the super nodes on the world wide web. If the world wide web has a center, it is likely to be Google.

Google has discovered, however, that it can extend beyond being a super node to which all other nodes connect. By disseminating itself in the form of Analytics, AdSense, and AdWords, it can become part of every other node.

When Larry Page and Sergey Brin were negotiating with Wall Street underwriters to take Google public, there were many business experts who could not understand how their business model made money – or sense for that matter.[1] These experts, if you will pardon the pun, were rather short-sighted and missed the fact that Google is able to make money by what is known as the long tail, or selling a large number of items in small quantities.

In his book titled The Long Tail[4], Chris Anderson explains how a study of music downloads on Rhapsody demonstrates the long tail phenomenon. Mr. Anderson found that though the blockbuster hits, which account for 20% of music titles, may enjoy millions of downloads, the remianing 80% of titles or non-hits, when added together, account for a much larger volume of online music sales.

Google has masterfully positioned itself, through its vast network of online properties and tools and extensive reach, to capitalize on the long tail by earning a few pennies from the mouse clicks of billions of web users. The long tail applies to Google’s model because each text ad may only be clicked a few times, but there are many millions of ads and many billions of clicks.

All roads, as the saying goes, may lead to Rome, but on the world wide web, all nodes – and mouse clicks – lead to Google.

The FBI’s outright denial of the existence of organized crime in New Orleans was unique to that city.

The facts reveal that the Bureau’s conclusions on Marcello in New Orleans were attributable to a disturbing attitude on the part of the senior agent who supervised the organized crime investigations in that city, Regis Kennedy.
