More information Recreating the Big Bang: With the world watching, one of the biggest scientific experiments, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), at the CERN laboratories in Geneva Switzerland was switched on for the first time on 10 Sept 2008. The LHC is an underground accelerator developed to recreate the exact events of the beginning of the universe. Scientists aim to study the collision of particles accelerated around the LHC, to understand how matter and the universe were formed. The University of Melbourne is one of only two Australian universities to be involved in the project.
